Designing a Winning Wheelchair Basketball Programme
The programme guide for Spinal Cord Injury Ontario’s wheelchair basketball tournament in 2018 went through a creative overhaul. Initially designed as a 2D layout with a different name, the team was looking for a fresh approach to the design style that would better reflect the high-energy and competitive nature of the event.
After careful consideration, we decided to take a new direction and give the guide a more exciting and electrifying feel. We wanted to convey the same sense of excitement and anticipation that one feels when participating in the event.
Our team worked collaboratively to revamp the guide, incorporating vivid colours and dynamic elements that would help showcase the competitive spirit of the tournament. We drew inspiration from the intensity and enthusiasm of the players and incorporated that energy into the design.
Throughout the design process, we were careful to consider the needs of the players, spectators, and sponsors. The resulting guide provided a comprehensive overview of the tournament schedule, locations, and rules, while also highlighting the players and sponsors who made the event possible.
The end result was a guide that not only met the needs of the attendees but also captured the essence of the event itself. The electrifying design brought the excitement of the game to life and helped to build anticipation and enthusiasm for the tournament.
The redesign was a success, and feedback from participants, spectators, and sponsors was overwhelmingly positive. The programme guide not only served as a valuable tool for navigating the event but also as a lasting memento of the excitement and energy that was shared by all who participated.

“That’s been one of my mantras — focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex; you have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple.”
“I think if you do something and it turns out pretty good, then you should go do something else wonderful, not dwell on it for too long. Just figure out what’s next.”
