70 years True North Gala – Event Design

In 2015, SCI Ontario was celebrating their 70th year.  Later that year, the organization would be celebrating with a Gala in the Autumn.  The Resource Development team needed some ideas to convey and express a Canadiana theme.  After much brainstorming and sketching, we came up with the idea of bringing the great outdoors inside, along with Canada’s Indigenous history and beliefs. Ideas such as a water creek, canoe, trees, a “Great Spirit”, Totem Poles were ideas that were brought up.  The result is a merging of Canada’s East and West, thematic elements made into a cohesive whole.

It involved a team of landscapers, artists and also events staff at the Grand Luxe Banquet Hall.  Along with great choices of culinary delights, the whole event made for a beautiful and experiential evening.

“That’s been one of my mantras — focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex; you have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple.”

“I think if you do something and it turns out pretty good, then you should go do something else wonderful, not dwell on it for too long. Just figure out what’s next.”
